Cuban Percussion Course: Level 2

Cuban Percussion Course: Level 2

13th October – 15th December 2026 (10 Weeks)

Times: 8.00 – 9:30 pm (1 1/2 hours)

Location:  Rising Tide Studios, 270 Mare St, Hackney, London E8 1HE

This course is aimed at those wanting to take their knowledge and skills in Cuban Percussion to the next level. To get the most out of this course students will already have a basic grounding in Afro-Cuban percussion. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of the fundamental conga sounds, including slap, open, bass, finger and muffled tones. They should also have an awareness of different clave patterns and rhythmic structures, together with a basic understanding of how individual drum parts interlock within an ensemble.

Students entering Level 2 should have some familiarity with rumba styles and at least one other Afro-Cuban tradition, such as batá or palo. While previous experience does not need to be extensive, students should be comfortable playing basic rhythms and participating in group performance.

Throughout the course, students will deepen their understanding of Afro-Cuban drumming styles, expand their repertoire, refine their technique, and strengthen their ensemble skills. There is a particular focus on developing a greater awareness of rhythmic relationships, learning more complex variations, and understanding how songs and drum parts work together within interlocking rhythmic structures. Students will also gain a deeper appreciation of the musical and cultural context of the traditions they are studying.

Bombo Productions prides itself on providing a friendly, supportive environment where students can enjoy learning music whilst connecting with a community of people passionate about drumming. Drums are provided.
