Vicky Jassey and David Pattman have spent years immersing themselves in batá music and its history, as well as the socio-religious environment within which this sacred drumming exists. Their shared experience spans more than thirty years in Cuba, Europe, the U.S., and, more recently, Mexico, giving them a unique perspective. As musicians—David is a sworn omo añá and Vicky has experience singing in rituals—their extensive connections to a global community of drummers provide a distinctive lens through which to explore and understand the legacy of this remarkable music.
Since Vicky Jassey and David Pattman began their journey, learning bata music and documenting the lives of ritual musicians, many of those musicians have since passed away. These documents, therefore, stand as a tribute to their legacy and to the new generation now stepping into their footsteps.
