David Pattman

David Pattman is a percussionist, drummer, and educator whose career spans jazz, Latin, and Afro-Cuban music. He began as a jazz musician, performing drums and percussion with leading artists including Django Bates, Tim Whitehead, Chucho Merchan’s Macondo, Loose Tubes, and Dudu Pukwana.

In the late 1980s he developed a deep interest in Latin music and became a founding member of several pioneering British salsa bands, including Valdez, El Sonido de Londres, La Clave, and Roberto Pla’s Latin Ensemble. Between 1988 and 1990, David spent time in the United States in New York and Miami, performing with legendary Latin singers Daniel Santos, Orlando Contreras, and with La Sensación, alongside El Niño Jesús and Eddie “Guagua” Rivera.

Over the course of his career David has performed with a wide range of internationally renowned artists including Omara Portuondo and Cachaito (Buena Vista Social Club), Bebo Valdés, Slim Gaillard, Carlos “Patato” Valdés, Daniel Ponce, Papaito, Henry Fiol, Tito Allen, Adalberto Santiago, Tito Nieves, Maelo Ruiz, Marvin Santiago, Cano Estremera, and Jimmy Bosch.

His recording career spans jazz, Cuban, and contemporary music. He has recorded with Jacob Collier, Paul McCartney, Vic Goddard, Tindersticks, Slim Gaillard, Snowboy and the Latin Section (eight albums), Alex Wilson (four albums, including co-producing Anglo Cubano, recorded in Cuba), Cubanismo, Alfredo Rodríguez (also recorded in Cuba), Cheikh Lô, and Afro Cubism.

For over twenty-five years, David has also been deeply involved in Afro-Cuban folkloric drumming, performing in both concert and ritual contexts. He is a sworn ritual batá drummer who has played alongside many respected elders of the tradition. Over the past decade, he has dedicated increasing time to teaching and sharing this knowledge, working with students individually, in ensembles, and at the university level.
